Hello all,
This past week, I had the pleasure of birding in and around my childhood county, mainly in pursuit of shorebirds.
The best habitat in the county was at the Mill Creek Wildlife Sanctuary, a restricted access site, requiring a permit. John Petruzzi and I visited three times (8/26, 8/28, and 8/31) and here are some of our highlights, with the number in parentheses reflecting our high count from these three visitations:
SEMIPALMATED PLOVER (2)
KILLDEER (45)
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER (5)
LEAST SANDPIPER (20)
WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER (1)
PECTORAL SANDPIPER (9)
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER (1)
SPOTTED SANDPIPER (2)
SOLITARY SANDPIPER (4)
WILSON’S SNIPE (2)
LESSER YELLOWLEGS (12)
GREATER YELLOWLEGS (6)
The majority of these birds were juveniles, with the exception being a few adult peeps and the WRSA was also an adult, molting into basic plumage.
Other interesting birds during our time there included:
LITTLE BLUE HERON (1)
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON (1)
GREEN HERON (36)
PURPLE FINCH (1)
COMMON GALLINULE (5)
PEREGRINE FALCON (1)
The immature LBHE was last seen on 8/28. It stayed for exactly three weeks. At one point in August, there were three immature LBHE at the Sanctuary.
