SPECIES IN ALL CAPITAL LETTERS ARE REVIEW-LIST SPECIES. Details of
these sightings are desired by The Ohio Bird Records Committee. Careful
observation, not ornithological expertise, is the only qualification
for submitting your data. For details and pointers see:

ROSS'S GOOSE: Suzanne Wagner found one at Lakewood Park, Cuyahoga
County, on the 12th that was seen through the 16th. A negative report
was issued on the 20th. A couple of people have suggested this is a
hybrid; more have argued otherwise.

CACKLING GOOSE: The bird long resident at Maumee Bay State Park, Lucas
County, was seen again on the 17th by Luke Rosen. Nate Nye found one in
a large goose flock at a pond at Spindler Rd & Summerlawn Dr in
Hilliard, Franklin County, on the 20th.

Brant: Craig Holt reported one from Evans Lake, Mahoning County, on the
14th.

Long-tailed Duck: Tom Barlett reported that three were found on the
Kelly's Island census on the 17th. Craig Holt found two at Conneaut,
Astabula County, on the 18th, and a female was reported by multiple
observers at Gordon Park, Cleveland, from the 18th to the 20th.

Red-necked Grebe: Rick Asamoto and John Habiq spotted one off the
Furnas Rd Boat Ramp at Caesar Creek State Park, Warren County, on the
17th.

Eared Grebe: Multiple observers reported one, most recently on the
20th, at Gordon Park, Cleveland.

Northern Goshawk: Surprisingly, three were reported this week. Greg
Links saw one at the Pine Grosbeak spot at Obee Rd on the 14th. Jim
McCarty scored one for the Cleveland CBC at Eastlake Powerplant on the
15th, and one buzzed Craig Caldwell's home in Westlake, Cuyahoga
County, on the 21st.

Franklin's Gull: John Pogacnik reported one flew by his North Perry
home, Lake County, on the 15th.

Black-legged Kittiwake: Kentucky birder Brainard Palmer-Ball found one
in the Scioto Bottoms just west of Portsmouth, Scioto County, on the
19th. It's a first state-record for Kentucky if it reaches the Ohio
River, so please keep an eye out.

Purple Sandpiper: John Pogacnik reported two flew by his North Perry
home, Lake County, on the 16th.

RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD: According to Jim McCormac's blog, an adult female
was banded at a home in Mansfield on the 19th. The adult female at a
residence in the Hartwell/Wyoming neighborhood of Cincinnati was still
present as of the 20th. The male visiting a heated feeder in Bluffton,
Allen County, remains as well. Pictures at Rarebird.org show the
Bluffton bird to have advanced into more adult plumage since it's
October arrival. Birders are welcome. Linda Houshower, the homeowner,
provided these directions: Bluffton is off I-75, 18 miles north of Lima
or south of Findlay. Take either Bluffton exit, east on Main St. to the
Fire station on one corner, and East of Chicago on the other corner,
the street is Washington. Turn left (north), 3 stop signs (Jackson,
Lawn, Spring), the house is a tall brown with red roof on the right,
where the street dead ends. Park on the side of the street or at the
dead end. Come up the sidewalk towards the house, can't miss the
feeders and activity.

Northern Shrike: Birds were reported on the 13th from the North Trail
at Buckeye Woods Park, Medina County; on the 18th and 21st near the
boardwalk at Irwin Prairie, Lucas County, and on the 21st at the old
Richfield coliseum site, Summit County.

Yellow-headed Blackbird: Sean Williams spotted a female along County
Road 156 in Cardington, Morrow County, on the 16th.

PINE GROSBEAK: Reported on the 14th and the 18th. The bird was seen at
its usual spot along Obee Road just east of its intersection with Rt
295. This is just east of Oak Openings Metropark, Lucas County. A metal
gate on the north side of Obee Road and a sheep pen on the south are
good landmarks. Photos at Rarebird.org.

White-winged Crossbill: Dan Sanders and Ben Warner saw the bird at John
Pogacnik's North Perry home, Lake County, on the 18th.

Common Redpoll: Starting to feel common, indeed, with about 16 reports
from the northern half of the state. Publicly accessible places include
Secor Metropark, Maumee Bay State Park, and Woodlawn Cemetary, all in
Lucas County, and Delaware Wildlife Refuge, Delaware County.

Evening Grosbeak: On the 18th, three were visiting a private feeder in
the Oak Openings area, Lucas County. The feeder is at a home near the
Walbash Cannonball bike trail, west of Rt. 64 and a little east of
where the bike trail approaches Monclova Rd.
