We were treated to watching a young peregrine (male? it was small) at Chippewa Lake this afternoon. Although it sallied out over the lake, the mallards and black ducks there weren't too concerned, to our surprise. I hope he successfully finds prey!

Two days ago there had been 5-600 Mallards competing for a very small unfrozen narrow reach in the lake. Today there were only 150 Mallards, 15 Black Ducks and several hundred Ring-Billed Gulls. In addition to the resident 2 adult Bald Eagles, a single juvenile eagle was circling high above the lake.

I wonder if the eagles have a new nest--they didn't use the Kennard Road nest last spring, and a ranger told us they haven't been hanging around it this fall, either. Nor have we seen them there, though we've been seeing them on the lake, often on the north end.
