Taking advantage of the comfortable weather today, Linda joined me during the afternoon as I began my fall maintenance of my nest boxes off Wiese Road. The season's storms took out 6 of my 24 boxes which seems to be the norm this year. More boxes were destroyed by weather in 2012 than over the previous 25 years combined. It's like there was a tree homing device on them. Hopefully I won't see another year like this for a long time.

On a more positive note, the near shore and mudflats were filled with a variety of shorebirds and waders. Many Great Egrets and a decent variety of shorebirds including Buff-breasted Sandpipers. The treed area between the bike path and the mudflats had a small variety of warblers, Cedar Waxwings (100+) and Red-headed Woodpeckers (6). This has been a bountiful year for the Redheads at the Hoover Nature Preserve with 14 confirmed nesting pairs.
