No luck on the Northern Saw-whet owl yesterday (December 28). Asked several other birders and no one else had spotted it either.

Did have quite a few ducks and horned grebes on a relatively calm lake. Highlights were a Canvasback and Eared Grebe. Also Buffleheads and Ruddy Ducks. Huge rafts of ducks further out, but I didn't have a scope, so not sure what they were.

Also stopped by Wendy Park. Loads of gulls, mostly Ring-Billed. Also saw one Greater Black-Back. Note that you need to take tour through NEORSD Westerly to get there. Fortunately some construction workers helped point us through. Signage was a little confusing.

Happy birding!

Barb

If you’re coming to get a look at the saw-whet, it’s in a pine tree next to the parking lot and ranger station.

There’s a pine that has three trunks off the main one. Follow the middle one up, it has a curve in it. At the curve, look a little to the right and you’ll see the “blob” of the bird.

It’s a challenging look. Moving around the tree doesn’t really help. Best shot to see it is about 5 feet to the west of the main trunk, looking nearly straight up.

Your mobile device’s camera won’t get a good picture; you need a real camera with a real lens. You know what I mean. (laughs)

Good birding!

— Gregg
