We decided this blustery afternoon to go birding from the car along the river and try to find some of Eric's great gull sightings. We drove along Carillon Rd. by the park and along Veteran's Parkway. I was using binoculars from the car so probably missed a lot of good birds but there were lots of gulls and Canada geese in both spots.

Seen: 1 adult lesser black-backed gull in the middle of a hoard of ring-billed gulls. there were two large juvenile gulls flying over the river that might have been greater black-backed gulls but might also have been herring juveniles.
Some of the geese were small enough they might have been cacklings, but I will admit I have trouble distinguishing them unless I hear them. There were a few mergansers. A couple were probably red-breasted but at least one male showed the oh so white side of a common merganser. There were at least 2 red-headed ducks, a little pied-billed grebe and one lone coot hanging with a flock of mallards. At times the wind whipped the snow up into a white-out but it subsided enough to see the ones listed.
