I stopped by Lake Logan near Logan (Hocking County) today to have a look
around – I don’t get to this wonderful spot as much as I would like to. I
was surprised to see an amazing drawdown of the lake occurring. The top NW
¼ of the lake was mudflat. I couldn’t help dream of what a spot like this
would produce in August. Just the smell of the mud made me miss shore
birding. There were 19 Killdeer hanging out here, but nothing else. I was
looking for a December yellowlegs or Dunlin but it was not to be. I asked
two different people if they knew what the draw down was for and one person
mentioned to control vegetation and the other mentioned that the “US Corps
of Engineers is building a wetland”. Do any local birders know the case? I
have seen late fall/winter draw downs of other nearby state park lakes such
as Dow Lake at Strouds Run State Park in Athens and Lake Hope State Park in
Vinton county.

Additional birds of interest were Hooded merganser (over 200!), Gadwall
(25), Shoveler (2), Bonaparte’s gull (2), and two adult Bald eagles hanging
out very close to each other for awhile. One was seen later carrying what I
presume to be nest material.
