Today I stopped at the wilderness center in Stark County. I did not find anything particularly rare but I did see some decent birds none the less. The feeders produces a female Purple Finch, a red-breasted Nuthatch, and several Field Sparrows along with the usual assortment of feeder birds. Other birds of interest were 6 Tee Swallows (over the pond) and 3 Eastern Phoebes (along the trails). I was at the Wilderness Center last Monday during the evening to see the woodcocks display. They never did end up flying into the air as long as I was there but an estimated 4-6 individuals were calling from the ground. However, I was greatly entertained by a pair of very vocal Barred Owls that called loudly from the woods the whole time I was there. What really surprised me today was when I heard what I would assume is the same pair calling at 3:15 in the afternoon! If you live near the Wilderness Center and need a decent birding spot but don't have a lot of time, it is worth
the stop!
