Subject: Ohio Christmas Bird Counts

While I'm not going to address the merits of hunting or not hunting,
since it's against list rules, I will say that Ohio's deer herd is
estimated to be around 600,000 animals. Deer browsing can severely
impact a forest understory which can have deleterious impacts on nesting
birds. Deer also can impact birds and butterflies by eating eggs,
nests, and even nestlings.

Hello Casey, with cc: to the Ohio Birds List.....

I have 30 hunters on my property today and I have already harvested a deer
with handgun. I know every one of these hunters on my property but I
haven't a clue who got out of the 250 to 300 cars and trucks that are parked
along our little two lane road of 5 miles length. If you are out in your
truck and happen to encounter an oncoming vehicle one of you is going to
have to back up to an open spot. And open spots on our road are hard to
locate; there's only two of us that live in the entire length of the road.
Normal traffic on a weekday along our road is 10 to 20 cars during an entire
day. Today it looks like an Interstate Highway.

To the list:

If you are out during any hunting season, especially White-tailed Deer gun
season, PUH-LEEEZE wear a high visibility orange vest. These vests are
available for a couple of dollars at any Whatever-Mart and are an investment
beyond price. In Muskingum County it sounds like the end of the cycle in a
popcorn popper out-of-doors today; just a slow pop, pop, pop all the time.

Back to bird sightings......

Cordially,
Tom Slater
