Greetings --
Some nice suburban surprises to share:
In Beachwood (Cleveland suburb) from Fairmount Blvd. near I-271 I observed a
pair of black-crowned night herons flying over.
In Shaker Heights at Horseshoe Lake Park I observed 1 red-headed woodpecker.
These seemed like unusual occurrences, though perhaps not "rare" for the
city, but I thought others in the area might like to know. I feel like in
Cleveland-area parks I'm likely to see even a pileated woodpecker more often
than a red-headed. So I loved seeing it here!
If the BCN herons were flying together are they likely nesting in the area?
Although, on second thought, I see these guys flying "in formation" together
in larger groups, so maybe these weren't necessarily a mated pair, just
doing their sociable thing. I'd welcome any thoughts.
Speaking of sociable, here is a an observation of some interesting
behavior:
from I-271 near Chagrin Blvd., about a month ago (around Valentine's Day)
I saw a sight which made me go "Awwww" ...a pair of red-tailed hawks
sitting on the same branch... shoulder-to-shoulder like a couple of love
birds. I've seen thousands of red-taileds along highways, often in company
with each other, but never cozied up together. I thought it was cool.
