As of now, the convergence of North Atlantic weather conditions is
estimated to come ashore with a bang on Tuesday. It has apparently just
hit the Outer Banks. Ohio seems unlikely to suffer loss of life or
property from this storm, but it easily could stay big enough at least
to bring pelagic waifs to eastern Lake Erie as it moves west and peters out.
The folks at eBird, windy enough themselves as usual, have issued
advice about birding these weather conditions. Ohio birders probably
shouldn't worry any more than usual about mortal dangers, but
the alert, at http://ebird.org/content/ebird/news/hurricane-sandy ,
has some good advice that includes info on finding and documenting
rarities. For us inlanders that certainly includes getting lots of
photos of anything interesting. Sure, most of us can recognize a
skimmer or a frigatebird, but doping out tubenoses offshore in wind and
rain and snow will be very tough without photos.
Stay safe, and good luck,
Bill Whan
