Greetings all and a joyous Thanksgiving to you -
Phil Chaon and I hit the Cleveland region lakefront this morning from 8 am - 1:30 pm. The incredible weather, clear, warm, and light south winds pushed the majority of waterfowl and gulls offshore between a quarter to 3 and 4 miles out. Bonaparte's Gulls are still staging offshore Edgewater State Park and Wendy Park and East 72nd (to 1200 between both locations) as well as off of Rocky River Park (200). Common Loons (60) off of Cahoon Park/Huntington Reservation, plus Horned Grebes (just under 100 today between all locations) are still staging mostly on the west side. White-winged Crossbills, redpoll, siskins were all heard and some seen as flyovers at multiple locations today. LAPLAND LONGSPURS and Horned Larks were really on the move today, plus some Snow Buntings, with close to 250 Laplands between Dike 14, Burke Lakefront Airport, Edgewater, Wendy Park west to Rocky River Park. Groups were flying overhead along shore or to a few hundred feet offshore. We checked as much of the outer CLE breakwall as we could for Purple Sandpiper to no avail today.
Tomorrow (Friday) looks great for a lakewatch or harbor checking, as does Saturday. Friday: west winds at 20+ mph, temp drop. Saturday: WNW winds to 20+, cold. Saturday could be an ace day.
Best - JB
