We visited Pine Lake in extreme southeastern Mahoning County this morning, Friday, about 11AM. The abundance of waterfowl and variety was amazing. We recorded 18 different species. The highlight being 71 Common Mergansers, with males and females being of about an equal count. They were in three scattered groups at the south end of the lake. Some of the other birds of interest in good numbers were; Horned Grebe, Pied Billed Grebe, Double-crested Cormorant, Tree Swallow, American Coot, Herring Gull, and the Bald Eagle pair at their nest adjacent to Lipply Road on the southend, by the Firestone tractor tire test track. Check out the remote controlled driverless tractors. The waterfowl species seen in good numbers were; Canada Goose, Wood Duck, Gadwall, American Wigeon, American Black Duck, Mallard, Northern Shoveler, Northern Pintail, Green-winged Teal, Canvasback, Redhead, Ring-necked Duck, Lesser Scaup, Bufflehead, Hooded Merganser, Common Merganser, Red-breasted Merganser, and Ruddy Duck. Pine lake is located east of SR7 just above the Columbiana County line. Easiest viewing is from The Pine Lake Preserve residential area, and is accessed from SR7 on Harbour Lights Boulevard, opposite Garfield Road. View from the cable gate area at the bottom of the hill. To scout the entire lake, take a drive around it. A scope is recommended.
