This afternoon, Friday, from about 2:30PM to 3:15PM, my wife Denise, Ronnie Macko, Shari Jackson, and myself; remarkably had 4 Red-necked Grebes feeding together, constantly diving, at times with all four being side by side. They all appeared to be adults in transition, from breeding to winter plumage, still showing some reddish coloration. The location was at West Branch (Michael J. Kirwan Reservoir), in eastern Portage County. Viewing was from The East Boat Ramp parking lot, on the extreme southeast corner of the lake, at the end of Gilbert Road. The red-necked Grebes were in the middle of the lake, between the picnic shelter and the concrete structure at the dam. Recommended access is to go west from SR225 on Cable Line Road to Gilbert Road, turn right, proceed past Kestrel Way until you are looking at the picnic shelter. Some of the other birds of interest at the site were, 20+ Common Loons, 100+ Bonaparte's Gulls, 30+ Snow Buntings, 1 Horned Grebe, 6 Pied-billed Grebes, and 200+ Ruddy Ducks. Eastern Bluebirds and Yellow-rumped Warblers were on the roof of the picnic shelter.
