Hi Everyone,

Since I’ve started posting on ebird, I’m afraid I’ve neglected Ohio-Birds
and my own little list—sorry about that…

Well, yesterday (Saturday), we spent the day in Ottawa and Lucas counties.
Two passes through the wildlife drive in Ottawa National Wildlife refuge
produced some nice sightings, though there was virtually no habitat for
shorebirds, and our clearly identifiable ducks were all Mallards.

The two best moments were probably first, seeing five White Pelicans fly in
to join the one we had already seen, sharing a pool with Trumpeters, Canada
Geese, gulls, and Caspian Terns, and then seeing probably thousands of
Monarch butterflies congregating on cottonwood trees (only cottonwoods—not
on oaks, willows, dogwoods, etc.), preparing to migrate—got some good
photos and videos of them, but this medium doesn’t accept imagery. This was
a terrific moment, as it had been years since we had seen such
concentrations of Monarchs. And in truth, even in our garden this year we
had more than we have seen in some time.

Later, we went for the first time to the still-new Howard Marsh—by now it
was raining pretty steadily, but we did see a little, at least.

Our lists follow.

Best wishes, good birding to all—and let’s stand up for conservation…
