I birded at Conneaut harbor this morning and then checked Pymatuning L. (Ohio side) on the way home. At Conneaut, the toll gate to the spit was locked closed, so I scoped the spit from the marina road (since it was raining most of the morning). The lagoon and harbor were also productive. Birds seen included: wood ducks, 14 gadwall, 7 blue-winged teal, 2 n. shovelers, 2 ring-necked ducks, bufflehead, 85 red-breasted mergansers, pied-billed grebes, double-crested cormorants, 25 turkey vultures, 10 bald eagles, killdeers, 4 sanderlings, 10 dunlin, 14 greater yellowlegs, 100 Bonaparte's gulls, and belted kingfisher. At Pymatuning L., there was some shorebird habitat at the west end of the SR 85 causeway. Here I found killdeers, 45 dunlin, 4 lesser yellowlegs, 14 Bonaparte's gulls, and belted kingfisher. Along the causeway I saw 9 tree swallows and a barn swallow. Craig Holt, Lowellville, Mahoning Co.
