I headed north to the lake today. I saw a few things that Jay or some other Jan. 100 birders coming from the south might be interested in.
At the northernmost rest stop on I-71 northbound (Medina County, N of 271) there were a pair of Red-breasted Nuthatches foraging in the pines by the fence. There were also Black-capped Chickadees there (a great bird if you live in the southern 2/3rds of the state!).
At Sims Parks in Euclid there was a female Black Scoter, but that was the only scoter I saw. Other ducks there included R-b Merganser, C Goldeneye, and Bufflehead.
E. 72nd St. was well covered in previous posts. I found multiple Iceland and Glaucous Gulls within minutes, but I never could find a L Black-backed there despite the fact that everyone else seemed to be seeing them. They were fairly easy to see at Avon Lake, though, since there were fewer black-backed gulls and they were more spread out. I was at Avon Lake for over an hour, but didn't see the jaeger. Has anyone seen it since the 30th?
I looked around the Lorain harbor in the waning light, but couldn't find the Franklin's Gull reported yesterday. There were tens of thousands of R-b Gulls to sort through, so a few minutes there isn't enough. A D-c Cormorant was my only yearbird there (#81).
