*APRIL 07, 2018* - CUYAHOGA VALLEY MONTHLY TOWPATH TRAIL CENSUS.
*HIKE*: Red Lock Trailhead south to Merriman Valley.  *TIME*: 7:00am -
5:10pm  *TEMP.*: 28 ~ 40
*COND.:* Chilly early, turning mostly sunny, bright, and cool all day;
winds SW at 5mph.
*TRAIL COND.*: Firm and frozen; a few silty washouts south of Ira Rd. All
downed trees from last month's census have been cleared. Footbridge south
of Boston Store is still out;
we were able to cross the steel construction plates at the first footbridge
south of Deep Lock, but bridge still out; Second footbridge south of Deep
Lock still out and had to detour
through woods, out to Riverview Rd., over creek, and back onto Towpath
Trail; bridge still out at Furnace Run and had to detour by way of Valley
Trail, out to Riverview Rd., over
Furnace Run and through Szalay's Farm Market back to Towpath Trail.  *RIVER
COND.*: High, swift, and muddy due to rains earlier in the week; no rock or
sandbars visible.
*FT.MI.*: 13.20  *OBS.*: John Henry, Christopher Medvedeff (Red Lock
Trailhead to Trail Mix in Peninsula), Douglas W. Vogus.

*I. MAMMALS*: 8 SPECIES, (1 SPECIES NEW TO CENSUS).

   1. Eastern Cottontail - 2
   2. Eastern Chipmunk - 9
   3. Eastern Gray Squirrel - 3
   4. Eastern Fox Squirrel - 9
   5. Red Squirrel - 19
   6. Common Muskrat - 3
   7. Long-tailed Weasel - 1 (at Stanford Swamp and carrying a dead vole)
   (New Mammal on Census - now at 20 species of mammals since 01/2010)
   8. White-tailed Deer - 3 (doe)


*II. BIRDS*: 61 SPECIES, (NEW HIGH for SPECIES in APRIL - PREVIOUS WAS 59
in 2015, 1 SPECIES NEW TO CENSUS), 972 TOTAL BIRDS.
(NOTE: m = male; f = female; ? = bird was seen but not sexed; * = bird was
heard calling but not sexed)

   1. Canada Goose - 47 (2 nests - one nest with at least 1 egg)
   2. Wood Duck - 23 (15m,8f)
   3. American Black Duck - 6 (3m,3f)
   4. Mallard - 15 (11m,4f)
   5. Northern Shoveler - 4 (2m,2f)  (New Bird on Census - now at 182
   species of birds since 01/2010)
   6. Ring-necked Duck - 7 (5m,2f)
   7. Bufflehead - 2 (1m,1f)
   8. Common Merganser - 1 (m)
   9. Pied-billed Grebe - 1
   10. Rock Pigeon - 4
   11. Mourning Dove - 18
   12. American Coot - 6  (New Census High - previous was 4 birds on
   04/2014 & 04/2015)
   13. Killdeer - 3
   14. Ring-billed Gull - 2
   15. Great Blue Heron - 46
   16. Great Egret - 1  (Tied Census High from 05/2010 & 04/2014)
   17. Turkey Vulture - 11
   18. Cooper's Hawk - 1 (m)
   19. Broad-winged Hawk - 1 (divebombing 2 Red-tailed Hawks north of
   Peninsula)  (First April Record on Census)
   20. Red-tailed Hawk - 4  ("Stanford Nest" and "Yellow Creek Nest" appear
   unused)
   21. Belted Kingfisher - 3 (?)
   22. Red-bellied Woodpecker - 24 (10m,3f,11*)  (2 nests under way - one
   in a dead ash tree and one in a sycamore snag)
   23. Downy Woodpecker - 9 (3m,3f,3*)
   24. Hairy Woodpecker - 5 (1m,1f,2?,1*)
   25. Northern Flicker - 4 (1m,3*)
   26. Pileated Woodpecker - 8 (1m,2f,1?,4*)
   27. Peregrine Falcon - 1 (m)  ("Trailblazer" at the Ohio Turnpike bridge)

   31. Horned Lark - 1  (fly-over north of Boston)  (First April Record on
   Census)

   46. House Finch - 10 (3m,1f,2?,4*)

   1. Common Snapping Turtle - 1
   2. Midland Painted Turtle - 29


*IV. AMPHIBIANS*: 1 SPECIES.

   1. Northern Spring Peeper - about 15 (heard only)


*V. FISHES*: 1 SPECIES (UNKNOWN)

   1. 3 Unknown Minnows in Lock 28 (Deep Lock), similar to Brook
   Stickleback, but looks were not good due to shadows and underwater leaf
   litter.
