Another drive behind Fremont's Water Filtration Plant. Two adult Bald
Eagles perched over the warm, open-water stream emanating from the plant.
About 50 beautiful wild Mallards were grabbing the "shiners" and I watched
their antics when trying to swallow them whole. Around 5:30pm several
Mallards flew in from who knows where, a pair. For the next 20 minutes,
pair after pair of Mallards flew into the warm stream. They came in by the
pair and in flocks up to twelve birds. But always in combinations of
pairs, male and female. I stopped counting after 189 Mallards landing in
20 minutes. They seemed VERY wild; i.e., nervous about my car although it
was a hundred feet away, heads bobbing, making several fly overs before
landing, bullet-shaped, calling others still airborne, etc. Only 8 Black
Ducks were among them. The Bald Eagles looked down upon the scene, but
made no move towards them. A nice scene to witness at the end of the day.
They faithfully come there at dusk. Robert at CREATE A WILDLIFE FRIENDLY
YARD.
