Julie and I looked at the lake at Buck Creek State Park from a few vantage
points this morning. This state park is in Clark County just northeast of
Springfield. We saw a number of ducks on the lake including Gadwalls,
Mallards, Green-winged Teal, Northern Pintails, Lesser Scaup, Buffleheads,
Hooded Mergansers, and Ruddy Ducks. We also saw five Tundra Swans. It looked
like a family group of two adults and three young birds. We saw a few
Pied-billed Grebes, a couple Horned Grebes, and two Red-necked Grebes. We
also saw several Common Loons.
We were walking along the shore of the lake near the Corps of Engineers
building when we saw a swallow. It flew out of view but we walked farther
north and found three birds. We watched them carefully for a few minutes as
they flew around low over the water and determined that all three were Barn
Swallows.
