The Ohio Avian Research Conference brings together professional academics, citizen scientists, museum workers, agency and non-profit biologists, students and birders from all over Ohio to share the latest information with one another about their research work both locally and globally, and to promote the science of ornithology to a broader audience.

The keynote speaker this year is Dr. Steve Beissinger .  Dr. Beissinger is a Professor of Conservation Biology at the University of California, Berkeley where he held the A. Starker Leopold Chair in Wildlife Biology (2003-2013) and a research associate of the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology.  He is also a Fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin. Professor Beissinger’s professional career has been devoted to producing ecological knowledge that can be used to both conserve biodiversity and to uncover basic processes in behavioral and population ecology that govern how nature works. His current research centers on two of the biggest challenges facing conservation and society –wildlife responses to global change and species’ extinctions – with recent work carried out in protected areas and working landscapes in California and Latin America. Current projects focus on: (1) long-term response of California birds and mammals to climate change as part of the Grinnell Resurvey Project; (2) metapopulation biology of secretive rails in a coupled natural-human system; and (3) avian parental care strategies and population dynamics, including a 30-year study of a small parrot in Venezuela. He has authored over 200 scientific publications and is senior editor of three books, including Science, Conservation and National Parks (2017) and Population Viability Analysis (2002). Steve is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin, and the American Ornithological Society (AOS), which awarded him the William Brewster Memorial Award in 2010 for his research on Western Hemisphere birds. Steve served on the Board of Governors of the Society for Conservation Biology, and is currently President of the AOS. Dr. Beissinger joined the faculty at Berkeley in 1996 after spending eight years as a professor at Yale University and two years as an NSF Postdoctoral fellow at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Zoo. He received a B.S. and M.S. in Zoology from Miami University of Ohio and a Ph.D. in Natural Resource Ecology from the University of Michigan.

(A/V presentations are typically15 minutes in length for most presenters, however we will have a

lightning round for undergraduates &/or high school students in which presentations are limited

to 5 minutes each)

•Registration will be open on Friday, September 1st.  This year student registration is just $15.00, and non-student registration is just $35.00.  While this reflects a slight price increase for non-students, we’re able to keep prices low due to the generous support of our conference sponsors which include the Nature Conservancy (TNC) of Ohio, Columbus Audubon’s John Wilson Memorial Education Fund, and The Department of Ornithology of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. Our keynote speaker is being sponsored by the Wakeman Foundation and Miami University’s Department of Biology.

•The deadline to register early is midnight on Friday, October 6th. After October 6th prices increase to $25.00 for students and $45.00 for non-students.
