Plenty of expected residents in parks along the Scioto River south of
downtown Columbus this morning. I stopped at Scioto Audubon, Berliner
Park, Haul Rd, and Scioto Grove, and found quite a few resident birds still
active and feeding young, if not singing. Notables included:
Osprey - single birds at many locations, plus a juvenile exercising his
wings on the tower nest across the river from the Scioto Audubon boat ramp
BaldEagles - no adults, but 2 juveniles were perched on the old railroad
bridge pylons in Berliner Park, likely fledged from the nest downstream
from there
Shorebirds - Killdeer at many locations, but also had Spotted Sandpiper
adults with juveniles at Scioto Grove
Flycatchers - could still easily find Acadian, Willow, Pewees, and Great
Cresteds at all of these parks. E.Kingbirds were at Scioto Audubon, Haul
Rd, and Scioto Grove
Vireos - Warblings & Red-eyed common along the river; a White-eyed was
calling at Berliner
Swallows - flocks of young Cliff Swallows at Haul Rd and Scioto Audubon;
Rough-legs, Barns, and Trees widespread, but no big numbers
Warblers - Yellows, Yellow-throated, and Common Yellowthroats at many
locations. Prothonotaries were singing at Berliner (2) and Scioto Audubon
(1).
Orioles - only a few females & young Baltimores were along the river, but
singing Orchards were at both Scioto Audubon and Berliner
