Passing this along. Matt Anderson, one of the top expert birders in Ohio, just saw a Gyrfalcon on the southeastern edge of the Toledo area. He saw the bird from Front Street in Perrysburg, and it was headed upstream (southwest) along the Perrysburg side of the Maumee River.

Obviously a mega rarity in Ohio. Even Matt, with all his intensive birding experience in this region, had never seen a Gyr south of the Michigan border.

This one will be hard to "chase" because there is a lot of good habitat along the Maumee. From where Matt saw the bird, it's only a short distance upstream to Sidecut Metropark and Fort Meigs State Memorial, and there is a lot of fine habitat and open country farther upstream from there. And wintering Gyrfalcons often range over large areas. But it would be worthwhile for birders to look for this Gyr along the Maumee River corridor. There's a chance that the bird will be relocated during the Grand Rapids - Waterville CBC on December 30.
