Greetings---things were fairly active at Conneaut this morning 10/9. Gulls were coming and going, with Bonies building to 400 after zero at dawn. A peregrine falcon also noticed them, and made a pass at one flock. Other birds of note were: Am. wigeon, 25 green-winged teal, 30 common mergansers (2 flocks from the east--are we seeing more early fall mergs from increasing numbers nesting nearby in PA?), Am. black duck, d-c cormorants, 2 juv. black-crowned night-herons, Cooper's hawk, black-bellied plover, Am. golden-plover, semipalmated plovers, sanderlings, dunlins, great black-backed gull, Am. pipits, golden-crowned kinglet, and white-throated sparrow. Then down to the west end of the Pymatuning Res. causeway. The Ohio portion had: green-winged teal, cormorants, 13 lesser yellowlegs, 2 least sandpipers, 30 fresh-looking pectoral sandpipers, a stilt sandpiper, and a lonely tree swallow. On the PA side of Pymatuning were Am. black ducks, n. shovelers, n. harrier,
greater yellowlegs, and lesser yellowlegs. The southern pond at the entrance to the State Fish Hatchery property contunues to be lowered, and is looking attractive to ducks, shorebirds, etc. Good spot for a possible LB dowitcher. The marshy area across the road bordering the main lake was down in one area, snipes and others may be lurking there. Habitat at the causeway is pretty good (in Ohio). So this area is well worth checking now, especially if you visit parts in both states. It will only get better in the weeks ahead as lots of waterfowl and other stuff arrive. Later, Craig
