I tried to send this yesterday, but I was distracted by lots of candy
beggars and it got bounced because I screwed up the address. I apologize
for the tardiness.
Tuesday morning the 30th, at about 11:15 I looked up and saw a big dark
raptor flying over the Visitor Center at C.J. Brown Reservoir near
Springfield, in Clark County. I was expecting a Turkey Vulture but when
it banked, I could see the shape was all wrong for a vulture. I jumped
up immediately from weeding the flower bed when I saw each wing had a
large white patch in the middle.
Being without binoculars, I ran down to the Visitor Center balcony to
the big binoculars on a pedestal installed for public views out over the
lake. These 10X40 lenses were perfect to watch a juvenile Golden Eagle
soaring on a thermal right out over the dam in front of me. The white
patches in the wings were easily visible, as well as the tail pattern
with a white base and wide, dark brown band at the end.
I tried to go in the office and grab a camera, but when I came out it
had reached the top of the thermal and headed southeast out of sight.
Perhaps it will stumble across the Wilds?
