I just talked to Mark Shieldcastle. I'd asked him to talk to the manager of
Pickerel Creek Wildlife Area to make arrangements for our Birding Ohio /
BSBO shorebird field trip next Saturday. The Pickerel Creek manager, Jim
Schott also manages Pipe Creek. Mark explained that Pipe Creek was hosting
some of the region's best shorebird habitat and the Jim was very
supportive. Normally he would close Pipe Creek a week before teal season
(which would be this coming Friday) but because Mark explained the
situation about birder access, the manager is going to leave Pipe Creek
open until Monday, August 27th. Sometimes ODOW's wildlife area managers get
a bad rap about managing their areas just for duck hunters. But most of
them are very supportive of birders, too. This is a great example.

Good Birding,

Subject: [Ohio-birds] Pipe Creek - hunting???????

It seems uncertain about the actual date that Pipe Creek will close for
teal season. Lots of rumors about several dates. As of this afternoon
there
is no signage about tomorrow. Does anyone on the listserve know for
sure???

If someone goes first thing in the morning, please post.
