We had a walk to Estel Wenrick Wetlands this morning near Medway in Clark
County. We parked at the lot on Union Road. As you walk along the main trail
there is a drop in the trail for a short distance. Shortly after that there
is a small trail off to the left. It is very wet but soon takes you to a
short section of boardwalk. Here we found a flycatcher and got very close
looks at it. It was rather a large Empidonax with a long primary extension.
It had a prominent round eyering and prominent wingbars. The bill was rather
large and orange yellow on the lower mandible. I could only make it an
Acadian Flycatcher. It was too large for a Least Flycatcher. Willow and
Alder don't really show that conspicuous eyering. It was as yellow as a
Yellow-bellied and the bill was really too large. It also really didn't
match any of the western flycatchers. I know this is very late for any of
the flycatchers but we got very good look at it from less than 20 feet. If
anyone wants directions to look for this bird, let me know. You can reach me
by email or phone 937-324-1871.
