I made a few stops around the north end of Hoover this afternoon, stopping
at Wiese Rd bikepath, the Area N Boardwalk, and Area M. Water levels are
finally low enough to create good shorebird habitat, but there just weren't
many shorebirds around this afternoon. Notables included:
White Pelican - an adult bird was swimming around near the east shore
across from the Wiese Rd mudflats
Cormorants - lots of Double-crested, with small flocks at many locations on
the reservoir.
Herons,Egrets - still some around, with 7-8 Great Blues and 3 Great Egrets
around the new shallows near the mudflats
Shorebirds - Killdeer in several places, though no great numbers. The
mudflats off the boardwalk also had 1 Greater Yellowlegs and 5 Lesser
Yellowlegs.
Woodpeckers - along with many of the regulars, Area M also had a Red-headed
and a Pileated.
Flycatchers - zilch
Vireos - Zero
Thrushes - a few Bluebirds and Robins, but that was all
Warblers - only Yellow-rumps, and not a lot of them
Sparrows - Song Sparrows in many places, as well as small flocks of
White-throats
