Conditions were apparently ideal at dusk this evening for snipe and woodcock
to display. Our 20 acres of wet meadow hosted 2 to3 Wilson's Snipe and 5 or
6 American Woodcock in full territorial courtship display. For about 15
minutes before dark things got downright frenzied with both species visible
overhead swooping and diving in every direction and winnowing and
twittering. Both have been displaying regularly for 3 or 4 weeks now but
this evening was definitely the peak so far this spring.
