Yesterday, on my way home from an informative two day Wildlife Biodiversity Conference at Lakeside, sponsored by The Ohio Division of Wildlife, I decided to follow up on an interesting, well written report on E-Bird, by Joe Luedtke on Wednesday the 7th. Three Cackling Geese and a Barnacle Goose can be found at the large pond which goes under the foot bridge to the entrance of The Kalahari Resort Water Park. As he explained, there are domesticated waterfowl present, so the Cacklers are most likely part of their collection. But, for anyone who has ever wondered if they could tell the difference between a Canada Goose and a Cackling Goose, this is your chance to improve your goose identification skills. After viewing the three Cacklers up close, I think you will realize that if you ever question whether you are looking at a Cackling Goose, it is probably not!Disregard the small size and just check out the cute, little snub-nosed face. Joe has some photos attached to his E-Bird report. Kalahari is located on US250 between the Ohio Turnpike and SR2 south of Sandusky. Of note: I have never seen Cackling Geese in captivity.
