Just received this from my NEAIR listserve and want to share it with
OAIR readers:

Subject: AIR grant availability announcement
Dear Colleague:
Following is a press release pertaining to the 1997 Association for
Institutional Research Improving Institutional Research in
Postsecondary Educational Institutions program. There have been
several important changes to the program this year:

* The guidelines have been edited to better reflect the need to
focus on research activity that uses national databases to
     improve institutional research and/or institutions.

* The categories of proposers have been altered to better serve
the target audience. The current fellowship category has been
merged into the research grant category, and the research
grant maximum has been increased to $20,000 renewable for one
     year.

* A new category has been added for an 8-10 day institute in
Washington, DC. This institute, tentatively scheduled for
June 23-30, 1997, will train participants on the National
Postsecondary Education Data at NCES and NSF. Scholarships to
cover travel and subsistence in Washington will be awarded to
qualified applicants on the basis of brief (maximum seven-
     page) applications.

The deadline for research grant proposal and seminar application
postmarks is January 15, 1997. We hope that you will be able to
include this announcement in an upcoming edition of your
newsletter, electronic list, or conference materials. A print
version is being mailed to you.

Should you have any questions, please contact Ann Macmillan, at
tel. 904/644-2933 or at the e-mail noted above.

Sincerely,

Terrence R. Russell

announces the 1997 program IMPROVING INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH IN
POSTSECONDARY EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS. This program includes
research grants, communications grants, and NCES/NSF Data Seminar
scholarships.

The goals of the program are to foster the use of the federal data

researchers (including the national sample surveys) in
postsecondary education decision-making, and to provide
opportunities to institutional research professionals for
professional development. Proposals are solicited from the staff
and faculty of postsecondary education institutions.

RESEARCH GRANTS
(1997 awards: $20,000 annual maximum, 2 year limit.)

The Research Grants Program will provide grants to investigators
to: (1) conduct research on institutional research in postsecondary

other research that promises a significant contribution to the
national knowledge of the nature and operation of postsecondary
education (for example, developing a model institutional data
system); and (3) conduct activities that will contribute to the
professional development of professional personnel working in
institutional research at postsecondary education institutions.
Additionally, proposals are solicited for small grants ($3,000
maximum) for communicating and disseminating information about the
content of the NSF and NCES data bases and techniques for
utilization of national data for analysis. Dissemination to

will be especially encouraged.
