I have to add my 2-cents here to set the record straight for the newcomers
and uninitiated......
In Ohio the institution is named: "Miami University."
In Florida it is named: "University of Miami."
Miami University is public.
University of Miami is a private institution.
Miami University is a strong academic institution
University of Miami is .... well ... can you say "football?"

Miami University was named after the Miami Indian tribe who populated this
region of the continent in the late 1700's and early 1800's (Miami
University was chartered in 1809). Miami still maintains a treaty and
excellent relationship with the tribe, now headquartered in Miami, Oklahoma,
and Chief Leonard's son is a distinguished member of our faculty. By the
way, the Miami's, whose land at one time included parts of Michigan,
Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin as well as Ohio, founded a settlement on
Lake Michigan, which is today the location of Chicago.
Some years after Miami University was chartered in 1809, two gentlemen from
Dayton, OH made a trip south to explore a peninsula of land that divided the
Atlantic Ocean from the Caribbean Sea. They founded a settlement on the
southeastern shore and named it after their beloved Miami Valley and the
Little Miami River of their native Dayton - they called it "Miami." And
thus the confusion began. So we were a university before Florida was even a
state, but the sportscasters append "...of Ohio" to our name whenever they
mention it to distinguish us from the football powerhouse in Florida, which
has a different name to begin with anyway

Probably more information than anyone needs,
Happy Thanksgiving,
Ralph

Normally when you hear "Miami University" you as well as others
fans...automatically think...FLORIDA!

Well...here in Ohio we too have a "Miami University". So, to
distinguish between them
sportcasters use the "Miami University in Ohio"

p.s. I know you don't really need to hear this

As the newest member to OAIRP (and a native Floridian who's about to go
through her first Ohio winter) let me say that I'd love to visit Miami!
Although the whole "Miami University" in Ohio still confuses me...
