Who knows how many lives were saved. I can't believe an FPE would make a point of water damage when the system extinguished a legitimate fire.

I am sure there are those on this Listserv that are familiar with Mary Erickson-Rattan. Mary describes an example she uses by using what building managers understand the most . . . $$$.

Mary tells a story where she takes a large bill ($100) to demonstrate the difference between water and fire damage. Mary will tear the bill in such a manner that with a portion she can have her money refunded to her by a bank. She then sets up an ash tray and a bowl of water. After she sets both portions of the money on fire she drops one into the ash tray and lets it burn and the other she drops into the water. The explanation . . . The ash tray where there is only ash left is fire damage and the portion in the bowl of water is the example of water damage. Which portion of the bill will the bank honor? Please do not damage actual money as I believe that it is against federal law, use fake money.

I have used this and it works well to make the point. Soggy drywall, computers, books, even cold hard cash, are replaceable, human life is not.

HU dorm fire leaves severe water damage
Friday, Dec. 01, 2000
Newport News (VA) Daily Press

HAMPTON, VA - About three dozen Hampton University students were forced to
move to other dorm rooms after an early afternoon fire Thursday caused
extensive water damage to their rooms.

The fire at Wilder Hall, a men's dorm on the HU campus, broke out about
12:45 p.m. on the fifth floor and was extinguished immediately, said
Victoria L. Jones, HU spokesperson.

But the building's sprinkler system tossed about two inches of water on the
floor, which seeped down to the dorm's fourth floor, damaging more rooms.
About 20 rooms were damaged by water in the dorm that houses 300 students.
University fire officials were using heaters and other equipment to dry the
damp rooms. By late afternoon, electricity was still shut off to the dorm's
fourth and fifth floors.

Fire officials suspected that an appliance caused the fire, but they were
still investigating, Jones said. No estimate of damage was immediately
available, she said.

Nearly 40 students were moved to temporary dorm rooms in the building and
throughout the university's campus.

No one was injured, Jones said. Throughout the day, university officials
helped students file insurance claims for their damaged belongings.
