The legislation that you are referring to is HR4504, Technical Amendments to
the Higher Education Act of 1965.

This legislation would make amendments to the 1965 Higher Education Act and
require that institutions report information on what fire safety features
are in their dormitories, such as sprinklers and fire alarms, fires, false
alarms, and fire safety policies. It will also require that the Secretary
of Education prepare an evaluation of fire safety at the nation's campuses
along with recommendations for future action.

Status: This legislation passed the House on June 12, 2000 and was referred
on June 13, 2000 to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and
Pensions. (Updated 8/1/00)

It was introduced by Representative Buck McKeon (R-CA).

Subject: Question on House bill

A bill passed the House on June 12 that amends the campus security
provision to require colleges and universities to disclose information on
fire safety in residence halls, including the status of fire alarms and
fire sprinklers and the incidence of fires and false alarms. Does anyone
have any more information on this bill? What is the bill number? Who
sponsored it? What is the current status of the bill? Where can I get
more information about it?
