The Seton Hall tragedy occurred one year ago today.  There are several
stories running that are looking back at what has occurred since that event.

experts from across the country gathered in Quincy, Mass., to begin a
campaign. Their mission: Make fire safety a higher priority on the nation's

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (AP) - Shawn Simons was moving too fast to feel any pain,
crawling down a hallway through smoke and flames that peeled layers of skin
off his face and hands. He wouldn't feel it until he woke up from a coma in
the hospital two weeks later.

Off-Campus House Fire
January 16, 2001

The following information was provided by John Basher, Colgate University on
the IACFSO listserv

Colgate University, Hamilton, NY
A fire in an off campus apartment house put 10 students in a situation to
find housing for the spring term No students were in the house as they will
not return from the semester break until Jan.20-21.

A 2 story wood frame structure was well involved in fire when a passerby
noticed the flames at 0241 hours on January 16.

The Hamilton Fire Department was on the scene at 0247hrs.  The fire had
already consumed the rear portion of the house located in a residential area
next to the Colgate campus in the Village of Hamilton, NY.  The house was
not equipped with a fire alarm system or a sprinkler system.

Ten students had to be notified to find another place for the Spring term
that starts next Monday, January 22.
