Dear Students,

Have you considered the benefits of undertaking an independent research project?

Each year, Miami’s University Summer Scholarship Program (USS) gives 100 Miami students a $3,000 award plus 6 credits of tuition. That’s a value of $6,000 (in-state) -$10,000 (out-of-state) per recipient.

Wouldn’t that make a nice holiday present for your parents?

It would—but where do you start? How do you choose a research topic? Find a faculty sponsor? Write a good proposal?

I’m glad you asked.

The Miami University Humanities Center invites you to take a FREE RESEARCH METHODS course this January 9-20, 2017.

Taught by Dr. Pepper Stetler and other faculty in history, philosophy, and literature, the class meets two hours a day for eight days. During the class, you will explore research methods in different fields, learn about faculty research projects at Miami, interact with professors from different departments, and develop concrete research skills.

Most important, however, you will leave the course with a research proposal that you can submit for a University Summer Scholarship (USS) just in time for the January 29 deadline. You can also use your proposal to apply for a Dean’s Scholarship, launch an Honors Program project, or attend the Luxembourg Summer Research Institute.

I invite you to sign up for this course now simply by writing to Sarah Siff Assistant Director of the Miami University Humanities Center. Please tell Professor Siff that you would like a place in the workshop and she will follow up about the details. Places are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Again, the Humanities Center offers this course free of charge to all humanities majors. (If you prefer, you may also take the course for one credit by paying the pay the per-credit-hour fee. )

For more information about this opportunity, please visit: http://www.units.miamioh.edu/humanitiescenter/node/336 .

Best wishes,

Tim Melley
Director of the Humanities Center
Professor of English
