Black Studies Program

Position Title:  Director, Black Studies Program

Qualifications:  The University of Missouri seeks an Associate Professor or Professor to serve as Director of the Black Studies Program. Nominations and applications are being accepted for this tenured position. Qualified candidates are expected to be eligible for a tenured faculty appointment in a relevant department.

The central mission of the Black Studies Program is to prepare students to critically understand the experiences of people of African descent in the United States, Africa, and the Diaspora. The Program's interdisciplinary design encourages specialization within MU's broad liberal arts curriculum. Students and faculty in the Black Studies Program collectively seek to appreciate the experiences and contributions of the African Diaspora as such appreciation is vital to grasping humanity's past, present, and future.

Candidates must have a doctorate in one of the humanities, the arts, or social science disciplines, plus a distinguished record of scholarship and professional activities in Black Studies and other related disciplines focused on the Black Experience - broadly defined, qualifying for appointment and tenure at the rank of Associate Professor/Professor. This is a 12-month position with preference given to those with administrative experience. 

Responsibilities/Duties:   The Director will be responsible for all aspects of planning, coordination and assessment of the Black Studies Program. Rank and tenure status commensurate with experience. Review of applications will begin November 1, 2009 and will continue until position is filled.  The Director of the Black Studies Program will begin duties no later than August 1, 2010. 

The Black Studies Program is currently in the process of proposing Departmental status at the University of Missouri. A successful candidate will be a central part of this process. 

Application Procedures:  Applicants should submit a letter of interest, CV, sample of scholarly/creative research, a vision statement for the MU Black Studies Program, and three reference letters written by individuals with first-hand knowledge of the candidate's scholarly and/or administrative credentials.
