The Information School - University of Washington

* Institute of Museum and Library Studies Doctoral Grant for Students from Underrepresented Groups

Towards the goal of diversifying the library and information science field and building the professoriate, the University of Washington Information School is proud to announce a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Studies (IMLS) to fund a cohort of four minority doctoral students. In addition to full funding, this unique doctoral opportunity incorporates an intense mentoring program with UW faculty and Puget Sound library leaders, travel benefits, and numerous professional development and socialization opportunities.

The iSchool is the fourth-highest rated information school in the country, according to US News & World Report, with its faculty among some of the most highly-regarded and prominent in the field of information science. As a part of a vibrant public university that embodies the difference learning and scholarship can make in communities regionally, nationally and internationally, the iSchool is committed to helping the world's best and brightest reach their potential.

All PhD students are supported throughout their studies through a combination of mentoring, involvement in research projects with iSchool faculty as principal investigators, and a culture of close collaboration with their peers. The breadth of expertise of doctoral students and faculty supports the iSchool's goal to produce rising academics nimble enough to address a broad range of issues in information science in diverse contexts. The IMLS cohort will benefit from the additional opportunity to go through the PhD program as a highly supported cohort, with a dedicated grad staff assistant for additional support.

TO APPLY

The School will award grants as part of the regular admissions process. Students will be accepted for matriculation in Autumn 2008. Acceptance will be based largely on shared student-faculty interests. Recipients of the IMLS award must be U.S. citizens.

Application Deadlines for Autumn 2008
* U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents: January 5
* International Applicants: November 19

NOTE: All application materials must be received by the indicated deadlines.
To be considered for admission, applicants must submit applications to the University of Washington Graduate School and to the Information School PhD Program.
