Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Strategic Training Program 
in the Transdisciplinary Approach to Inner City Health with a focus on 
Children's Health and Development

An Integrated Training Program in Health and Social Science Research
Centre for Research on Inner City Health of St. Michael's Hospital
Institute of Clinical and Evaluative Sciences (ICES)
Public Health Science, University of Toronto

Students and Fellows of all disciplines are invited to apply. This training
program is part of the CIHR-STIHR (Strategic Training Initiative in Health
Research).

The goal of the CIHR Strategic Training Program is to promote a new
generation of researchers with an interest in health and development in a
transdisciplinary approach, using both quantitative and qualitative research
methodologies, to understanding the health of marginalized populations. The
program aims to enable investigators-in-training to: 1) develop the
knowledge and skills needed to build their own research agenda designed to
improve the health of marginalized groups; 2) reach beyond the boundaries of
their own disciplines and methodologies in understanding and interpreting
their research; 3) gain a developmental perspective to research children's
outcomes; and 4) translate their findings to researchers, clinicians, policy
makers, community partners, and other stakeholders.

Opportunities exist for trainees with an interest in children's health and
well being to participate in ongoing research activities with faculty at the
Centre.  Trainees would have opportunities to publish papers using data from
a number of studies in these areas as well as participate in primary data
collection on ongoing research projects.

Examples of ongoing research areas include:

   a.. Social determinants of child health and human development
   b.. Policy evaluation of children's services
   c.. Neighborhood factors and multilevel modeling of pregnancy outcomes,
child health and child development
   d.. Spatial patterning of low birth weight, small for gestational age and
infant mortality.
   e.. Childhood well-being as predictors of later and adult well-being.
   f.. Partnered research with Toronto Public Health on perinatal and child
health research

Studentships

·        Eligibility - must be enrolled in an MSc or PhD program at a
Canadian university.

·        A major focus of research must be on marginalized populations.

·        $17,000 per year.

·        One (1) year of funding.

·        Students are expected to spend at least 75% of their time in the
Training Program.

·        The Training Program must be notified of all other awards that are
held or obtained during the studentship period. Other funding will be
allowed in replacement of any funds awarded by this CIHR Strategic Training
program. Top-up will be allowed up to the funding amount for studentship.

Fellowships

·        Eligibility - must hold either an MD or PhD and must be within five
years of completion of most recent degree.

·        $35,000 per year for PhD.

·        $35,000 per year for MD with 0-2 years experience.

·        $45,000 per year for MD with > 2 years of experience.

·        One (1) year of funding, with the possibility of extending to two
years.

·        Fellows are expected to spend at least 75% of their time in the
training program.

held or obtained during the fellowship period. Other funding will be allowed
in replacement of any funds awarded by this CIHR Strategic Training program.
Top-up will be allowed up to the funding amount for fellowship.

Applications

Required elements to include:

o       covering letter - The covering letter should outline the following:
Relevance of current research experience and training to the health of
marginalized populations with a focus on children's health and development;
expected outcomes for the year of funding; outline of your interest in
transdisciplinarity research.

o       references - at least three written references (one should be from
the thesis supervisor, or for post docs, mentor in current research),
preferably from the most recent research supervisors. References should
speak about the suitability of the applicant for this program considering
the use of transdisciplinary methods, as well as the relevance of the
applicant's interests in marginalized populations.

o       description of particular experience with or interest in research on
children

o       CV

o       transcripts (including undergraduate work) (copies acceptable)
