The Wiz

Directed by Dr. Paul K. Bryant-Jackson

Book by William F. Brown
Music and Lyrics by Charlie Smalls
Based on the story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by Frank Baum
Music Direction by Ryan Heinrich
Choreography by Chris Beiser

The Miami University department of theatre production of “The Wiz” opens at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 7, through April 8-9 and April 14-16, and at 2 p.m. April 17, in Gates-Abegglen Theatre.

This adaption of the Wizard of Oz features a cast of 30 along with a little dog, Toto. The musical production is a merger of theatre, concert, and dance along with elements of magic and fantasy.
The story is taken from Smalls' and Brown's 1975 Broadway musical that won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The play is a retelling of L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in the context of African American culture. A film adaptation of “The Wiz” was released in 1978 and received four Academy Award nominations.
Gion DeFrancesco, associate professor of theatre and scene designer, has assisted in bringing an element of “magic” to the stage with the use of a new, high-tech LED curtain. The SoftLed Curtain will deliver a number of special video and graphic effects that are unique to this production.

Tickets are $9 public, $8 seniors and $6 students/youth and available at the Miami University box office. Call (513) 529-3200 or order online at www.tickets.muohio.edu.
