The Cincinnati Enquirer, Friday, Oct. 22
Miami University's increased efforts to recruit minority students started
this week with a multimedia campaign called Multicultural Opportunities for
Reaching Excellence (MORE) in Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus, Cleveland and
Indianapolis.
And:
At a Hop-a-Thon at Miami University Middletown, children enrolled in the
campus Child Care Center tried to see how many times they could hop in one
minute.  Because of pledges the children had collected, each hop generated
donations for the Middletown Area United Way.  Includes a photo of the
children hopping and quotes Heather Porter (director, Child Care Center).
And:
Lists the three events (Rumpelstiltskin, Bing! Bang! Boom! and Velveteen
Rabbit) that Miami University's Performing Arts Series has this season that
are designed for families.
And:
"Weekend Events" column mentions that John Dolibois (former vice president
of university relations) will speak about the Nuremberg Trials Saturday at
the Butler County Soldiers, Sailors and Pioneers Monument and a concert by
Miami's Collegiate Chorale and Choral Union.
And:
Those who spoke at the first of five forums sponsored by the Regional
Transit Authority outlined a need to bring workers to companies springing
up in the county and to provide service to schools, including the Miami
University campuses.
And:
Feature about theater productions for children in the Weekend magazine
includes "Rumpelstiltskin," "Bing! Bang! Boom!" and "Velveteen Rabbit,"
part of Miami's Performing Arts Series.

Calendar items for Hiestand Gallery exhibits, art museum exhibits, "Twelfth

MIami's Make A Difference Day features many projects.  Quotes David Thomas

Retired Navy Capt. Gerald Coffee, a former prisoner of war, will speak on
"Beyond Survival" Friday, Nov. 12 at Miami University.

A large on-site audience and those listening to the live radio broadcast
heard from 15 candidates on Wednesday night at the candidates forum
sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Oxford and WMUB radio.

Skating lessons will be offered each Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday

The Middletown Journal, Thursday, Oct. 14
In the keynote address at the Minority Student Today Conference in San
Antonio, Texas, James Ewers Jr. (student affairs, Middletown campus) said
that college administrators in the business of recruiting minority students
can and should play a critical role in the students' lives.

Story about AT&T's key cable executive, Leo Hindery Jr., leaving the
company and his disputes with the company's CEO Michael Armstrong (alumnus).

The Middletown Journal, Thursday, Oct. 21
"Sound Off" section includes someone who said Miami University-Middletown
should change the name of "Minority Family Fun Day" to "Student Family Day"
because "the need for minority favoritism, entrance scores lowered for
certain groups of people, and offices opened at university expense to
display the culture of one nationality only, does not exist."

Dayton Daily News, Friday, Oct. 22
Story about five theatre openings includes Miami University Theatre's
production of "Twelfth Night."

The Middletown Journal, Thursday, Oct. 21
Guest column by James Ewers (student affairs, Middletown campus) about the
way parents relate to their children's coaches offers some guidelines for
parents and says parents should try to cultivate a spirit of cooperation
with coaches.

The Middletown Journal, Saturday, Oct. 9
Guest column by James Ewers (student affairs, Middletown campus) about teen
drinking says there is probably some relationship between teen drinking and
the high incidence of high-risk (binge) drinking at our nation's colleges.
Ewers says he thinks "colleges must continue to review their regulations so
that alcohol is not so readily available."
