The Cincinnati Post, Wednesday, August 25
With a new effort to curb excessive drinking on the Oxford campus, Miami
University will offer late-night alternatives to beer-laden parties, try to
educate young students about the reality of binge drinking and enforce a
parent-notification policy for anyone caught drinking underage.

Posting racist literature may be a political offense, but is not a crime,
according to the attorneys defending Nathaniel Snow and Brad Allen, two
former Miami University students charged with criminal mischief and
criminal trepassing.  Includes quotes from testimony by Sydney Carthell
(minority affairs).

attorneys say they didn't post the fliers in the CBCL last October, but
even if they did, they would have been exercising their free speech.

Letter to the editor from Kate Rousmaniere (educational leadership)
regarding the August 23 op-ed "Money Can't Buy Good Teachers" asks
questions such as "Why wouldn't higher salaries draw qualified people?" and
"Why wouldn't increased financing for education schools improve teacher
training?"  She also says "We seem to have great faith in money buying
quality in the rest of the world.  Why are teachers exempt?"

Columbus Dispatch, Friday, August 20
Two black workers of Honda of America have filed a class-action lawsuit on
behalf of 800 co-workers, saying the automaker excludes blacks from
management and tolerates racial slurs in the workplace.  Quotes James
Rubenstein (geography), who follows the auto industry.

Plain Dealer, Tuesday, August 24; Columbus Dispatch, Sunday, August 22
Story about the U.S. News & World Report rankings says Miami University was
listed 22nd overall among national public universities.

Butler-Warren Business Journal, Friday, August 20
Charles Watson (management) has written a book that guides readers through
the obstacle course of tricky workplace problems by showing concrete ways
to avoid career-crippling mistakes.  Quotes Watson.

Story about Christopher Hensley taking over as owner of Main Street Gourmet
quotes the previous owners as saying, "We are extremely grateful to the
many Oxford townspeople and Miami students who have been our patrons and
friends over the past 20 years."

The Stuart News/Port St. Lucie News (Fla.), Sunday, August 22
"The Week Ahead" section says on Monday (Aug. 23) two former Miami
University students accused of posting racist messages in the school's
Center for Black Culture go on trial.

The Middletown Journal, Wednesday, August 25
A jury was chosen Tuesday to hear the state's case against Nathaniel Snow
and Brad Allen, two former Miami University students accused of creating
campuses tensions last year by posting racist fliers in a black culture
center.

Miami University-Middletown opened a new school year with a formal opening
convocation Monday afternoon featuring remarks by student and faculty
representatives and Dr. George W. Reid, president of Kentucky State
University.  Quotes Michael Governanti (executive director, Middletown
