Minority applications to Miami University are up 25 percent since last
year, an increase university officials believe may be attributed to Miami's
recent
$200,000-plus recruitment campaign.  Quotes Myrtis Powell (student
affairs), Harold Brown (multicultural admission & enrollment services) and
Jim McCoy (enrollment services).

PBS Newshour, Thursday, Feb. 24
Steve Waksman, (visiting history professor) author of "Instruments of Desire:
The Electric Guitar and the Shaping of Musical Experience," was interviewed
regarding Carlos Santana and the Grammy awards.

The Cincinnati Enquirer, Saturday, Feb. 26
Randy McNutt's column is about alumnus Weeb Ewbank's collection of personal
papers donated to the university by alumni Gerald Stout and Nick Selvaggio.
McNutt says he's impressed that the alumni cared enough to obtain the
papers and that the university wanted them, since we live in a time when
many public figures are forgotten after their death.  Cites Daniel Layman
(divisional support) and Troy Hartman (intercollegiate athletics).
And:
Miami University faculty member Jose-Luis Novo will conduct 22 Miami
University musicians and 10 musicians from the Luxembourg Conservatory of
Music when they perform Monday in Washington's John F. Kennedy Center for
the Performing Arts.  The program will feature the Oxford String Quartet,
whose members are Harvey Thurmer, Emma Rubenstein, Mary Harris and Steven
Shumway (all music), as soloists.

Feature on the Grail movement, which has worked to empower women by simply
encouraging them to realize their full potential, says an upcoming event is
"I Am My Body: Celebrating Women" at Miami University.  The conference will
feature speakers who will "focus on increasing women's awareness of
themselves as creative, healthy human persons and encourage them to embrace
and celebrate their bodies."

Feature on Charlie and Delores Coles says they married while they were
students at Miami and talks about Charlie's coaching career and Delores'
singing group, the Fontones.  Includes several photos.

Miami University's Thomas C. Page Center for Entrepreneurship will sponsor
a one-day conference on women and entrepreneurship on April 6 at Marcum
Conference Center.

Blair Kamin, architecture critic of the Chicago Tribune, will present the
David B. Maxfield Memorial Lecture Friday, March 3 at Miami University's
art building.

Ray Terrell (educational leadership) will be a guest at Garfield Junior

so much state-owned, tax-abated property like Miami U."
