"Hometown" feature this week was on the McGuffey Museum and William Holmes
McGuffey's influence on education in America.  Phillip Shriver (history,
president emeritus) spoke on McGuffey's lessons of words and morals.

The Cincinnati Enquirer, Wednesday, April 28
Michael Chasar, (honors program adviser) has received a $5,000 Ohio Arts
Council Fellowship for 1999, one of 12 poets to receive the grant.

Detroit Free Press, Tuesday, April 27
According to industry observers and futurists, the plummeting price of
electronics will enable drivers of the most basic cars to enjoy fancy
navigation systems in the new millenium.  "America is already singularly
dependent on the car, and the next 50 years will bring a more dramatic car
culture to the rest of the world," said James Rubenstein (geography), a
specialist in urban studies and the automobile's impact on society.

Journal-News, Wednesday, April 26
A new Talawanda High School could be built on 157 acres on Millville-Oxford
Road near College View Motel if voters pass a $33 million bond issue in
November.  The city of Oxford and Miami University might have been willing
to donate land near Brookville Road but district officials determined that
location was too close to three new subdivisions.

Chicago Daily Herald, Monday, April 26
Even top students face top prices in their college search.  Mentions a
senior at Maine South High School who has been accepted by Miami University
and offered full tuition and room and board.

The Washington Times, Tuesday, April 27
Columnist discussing Theodore von Laue's article "The Soviet System
Reconsidered" is shocked that von Laue is defending Josef Stalin.  He says
Mr. von Laue's article is part of an ever-widening academic campaign among
a new generation of mainstream historians in the United States to rewrite
and thereby gild the history of the Soviet Union and mentions Robert
Thurston's (history) book "Life and Terror in Stalin's Russia: 1934-1941."

The Columbus Dispatch, Saturday, April 24
With a 3 percent unemployment rate in Franklin County, central Ohio student
have become a prized commodity.  The Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce
announced the first of what it says will be several initiatives designed to
keep central Ohio college students in the area after they graduate.
