A shortage of certified public accountants--expected to worsen in the Ohio
and across the country in coming years--has pushed their desirability to
record highs.  The competition for college accounting graduates is so
heated that CPA firms reportedly are offering signing bonuses.  Quotes John

William Hazelton (political science) has been awarded a senior research
fellowship at the Institute of Irish Studies, the Queen's University of
Belfast, for the 1999-2000 academic year.

Linda Neff (visiting instructor, physical education, health and sport
studies) received the Middle/Secondary Physical Education Teacher of the
Year Award presented by the Ohio Association for Health, Physical
Education, Recreation and Dance at a recent convention in Akron.

After just three years, Chris Lorenzen (alumnus), who works at LaSalle
Street Securities Inc., has become one of the most successful day traders
in Chicago.

Miami University seniors Kristin Nihill and Sarah Roman have traveled to 38
cities over the past 10 weeks as "Boca Buddies," promoting Boca Burgers,
soy-based frozen patties.

Dayton Daily News, Saturday, August 7
Three recent state champions are part of a 20-swimmer Dayton Raiders unit
who are representing Team Ohio in the Central Zone Championship swim meet
at Miami University this week.  The meet draws the nation's best youth
swimmers ages 9-18 who have met qualifying times.

The Middletown Journal, Sunday, August 1
Middletown entrepreneur Tom Frisch owns Internet Marketing Group (IMG),
which "optimizes (a client's) Web site to fit the criteria for each major
search engine," so the Web site will be easier to find.  Frisch attended
Miami University Middletown and has an associate's degree in computer
science.

Story about the Avon Centre in Trump Tower quotes Thom Gebhardt (alumnus),
the salon-spa's color director.

The Middletown Journal, Saturday, July 31
Guest column by James Ewers Jr. (student affairs, Middletown campus) about
standardized tests mentions a recent case where four high school student
athletes were ruled ineligible for Division I play because of low SAT
scores.  They have sued the NCAA and won the first round.  Ewers says the
results of the case will have great ramifications for the NCAA and the
issue of standardized test scores.

The Cincinnati Enquirer, Tuesday, August 10
A benefactor has given Boston College $5 million for student spiritual
retreats and volunteer programs, a gift that school officials say is
thought to be the largest that requires no bricks and mortar and no name
etched above a building doorway.

Dayton Daily News, Tuesday, August 10
The Mead Corp. Foundation is giving Wright State University $1 million to
help endow a chair in environmental sciences and renovate the business
school, company and university officials said.
