For now, American Airline pilots seem to have the upper hand in their
battle with the airline.  On Tuesday, the airline had to cancel nearly
one-third of its flights as pilots continued to call in sick or refuse
overtime work.  Quotes David Walsh (management), who specializes in airline
labor relations.

Charlotte Observer, Sunday, Feb. 7
Michael Armstrong (alumnus), the outsider who was appointed as AT&T's chief
executive in October 1997, is getting much of the credit for the company's
new aggressiveness.

Journal-News, Thursday, Feb. 11
Miami University's Hamilton campus has a record enrollment this semester with
2,681 students.  Sue Wilson (registration and records) says factors
contributing to the campus' growth are economic demands of the times, the
campus' placement system. active recruiting strategies and the fact that
the Oxford campus offers few evening classes.  Also quotes Jack Rhodes
(executive director).
And:
U.S. Rep. John Boehner's office responds to Richard Little's (university
communications) letter about Boehner's opinion of Miami's Title IX
compliance.  The response says Boehner based his interpretation on a letter
from the Department of Education which explains Title IX, and he was trying
to clarify a well-intentioned but problematic federal law.

Business Courier, Friday, Feb.5
Clyde Perfect has turned his ski resort into a success by breaking the
rules and making decisions based on instinct.  Quotes John Altman, who
started Miami University's highly touted entrepreneurship program.

The Kansas City Star, Thursday, Feb. 4
Story about Black History Month activities in Johnson County includes a
presentation on black Kansas writers by John Edgar Tidwell (English).

Cincinnati magazine, February 1999
Feature on Late for the Sky Production Co., which creates, manufactures and
sells Monopoly-like board games that target different colleges and cities,
says company president Robyn Wilson came up with the idea when she was a
student at Miami University.

Calendar listing for concert by "Beehive" at Miami-Middletown and Miami
University Theatre's production of "Company."

Dayton Daily News, Sunday, Feb. 7
"Speak Up!" section includes someone responding to Martin Gottlieb's
article about the racial incident at Miami University and asking the
question, "Do I understand that it's a fake crime only if it's perpetrated
by a minority?"

Guest speaker at the meeting for the Women in Networking Program will be
Miami University volleyball coach Carolyn Condit.

Soccer America, Friday, Feb. 5
The University of South Alabama became the latest school to drop men's
soccer because of financial concerns and gender equity.  Mentions that
Miami University trustees were to vote whether to drop four men's programs,
including soccer.

Dayton Daily News, Friday, Feb. 5
"Speak Up!" section includes a person who says "It appears that the racists
behind the Oct. 30 incident at Miami University have been discovered to be
some concerned student protesters.  A rush to judgment disrupted the lives
of innocent citizens of Oxford and the civil student body.  Now why don't
the perpetrators do the right thing by apologizing?"

Letter to the editor from Jonathan Boyd, an African-American and recent
graduate of Miami University, responds to letter writer Brian Jonson's
statement about how he tries so hard not to be racist.  Boyd says to imply
that the allegations against the two Miami students set him back is
questionable.  We can all come up with reasons to be racist because someone
always does something wrong to someone of a different race.

A free program on college planning is being offered by Miami Hamilton's
Office of Continuing Education today.

Carolyn Condit (MU volleyball coach) will be the speaker at the monthly
luncheon meeting of Women in Networking.

Journal-News, Thursday, Feb. 11
Dartmouth College, the school that inspired "Animal House," plans to put an
end to single-sex fraternities and sororities to foster more "respectful
relations" between the sexes.  Officials refused to say whether the plan
means requiring fraternities and sororities to go coed or phasing them out
altogether.

The NCAA urged a national commission studying gambling to push for a
federal ban on wagering over the Internet to protect the integrity of
college sports.
