The Diane Rehm Show, 10-12 noon (*2 full hours on WMUB)
10-11: Asthma: Asthma is on the rise in the U.S., especially among
kids and in low-income areas. The causes may include genetics,
allergies, air pollution, and many other factors, but researchers are
still trying to figure out why. A panel talks about the latest
scientific findings about what causes asthma and about the newest
treatment options.
Guests: Dr. Michael Kaliner, director of the Washington
Hospital Center Institute for Asthma and Allergy; Dr. Cal
Prusin, head of the clinical allergy and immunology unit at the
National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases; Linda
Borschuk, Allergy and Asthma Foundation of America
11-12 Mark Pendergrast: In his book "Uncommon Grounds" (Basic), Mark
Pendergrast traces the history of coffee and the role it has played
in the world economy. As legend has it, an Ethiopian goatherder
discovered it in ancient times. Today, it's a familiar, fragrant
brew you'll find in every kitchen, workplace and streetcorner
espresso bar.
Fresh Air with Terry Gross, 12:06-1 p.m.
A tribute to composer HOAGY CARMICHAEL. He wrote "Skylark," "Star
Dust," "Heart and Soul," and "The Nearness of You." Featured are
performances by singer Rebecca Kilgore and pianist Dave Frishberg,
and interviews with Carmichael's son, and his biographer. It's the
next in the American popular song series
