John Williams and I went out Sunday morning in pursuit of the Northern
Shrike at Brookville, which we found. Yay! It was conveniently perched
fairly close to the road and called a bit for us. So it's still around
for those who haven't had a chance to get out there yet.

While on one of the causeways I spotted a merganser, which we attempted to
identify, but couldn't because it disappeared under the water for LONG
periods and resurfaced only very briefly for air. I couldn't believe how
long it managed to evade our binoculars. Eventually, it disappeared
entirely, presumably under the causeway. I had no idea that those guys
could hold their breath for so long!

Happy birding,
Rebecca Elefante
