Greetings!
As Debra noted, we also banded our first American Tree Sparrow (ATSP)
yesterday at Hueston Woods (see below). It was a slow day overall--windy,
cloudy, cold-with little visible bird activity. In addition to the Tree
Sparrow, we also recaptured two Northern Cardinals (NOCA)--including 'Mad
Max' an after-hatch year (AHY) male Cardinal first banded April 16,
recaptured April 21, later recaptured July 30, and with no sense of humor,
recaptured again yesterday [see picture below]. Max weighed 40.1 grams in
April and 41.6 grams yesterday. Interestingly enough, the other NOCA
recaptured yesterday was a female initially banded on April 28 and also
recaptured on July 30. Something really cool, however, was a
White-throated Sparrow (WTSP) initially banded on May 3, recaptured
yesterday after apparently returning for at least a second winter below the
dam after a summer in Canada. This White-throat weighed 28 grams before
leaving in May and weighed 24.7 grams upon its return.
On a different note, three Cackling Geese (new species split from Canada
Goose) remain among the Canadas foraging at the beach yesterday.
Cheers
Dave
