Greetings!!!
I'm not sure why the numbers came out funky, they were attached in order,
however, despite the unusual numbering they certainly presented some fun
mid-winter challenges!!
Quiz Bird 1 and 1b = American Pipit. Usually these birds are cruising
over at 500 feet and all you see is a small speck; nice to have one down on
the ground. The white outer tail feathers are noticeable in image 1.
Quiz Bird 2 = Lapland Longspur [LALO]. We had several flocks of 20-30
birds that were pure longspurs--not mixed with Horned Larks like they
typically are along the roadsides in winter. We probably saw between 100
and 150 LALO along Stone Rd, north of Hwy 27, between 27 and 5-Points. We
were unable to find any Snow Buntings.
Quiz Bird 3 = Imm [second year] White-crowned Sparrow
[WCSP]. White-crowned Sparrows start molting into their adult plumage
starting usually in December. The change from tan/brown stripes on the
crown to the distinctive black and white of their adult plumage is gradual
sometimes taking several weeks. Consequently, in mid to late winter, you
will see WCSP's in the field with varying amounts of brown/tan, black and
white on the head. Notice the black feathers already appearing in the
lateral crown stripe of this individual.
Hope everyone did well!!
Dave
